Internet radio and iTunes

Music streaming on the internet is encroaching on broadcast and satellite radio. In the not-too-distant future broadcast radio will likely disappear and be replaced by music stored on iPod-like devices or streaming audio.

Do you listen to internet streaming music? I do, even though I have an extremely large collection of physical media and MP3's.

Below are some ideas on how to use iTunes to listen to internet audio streams:

If you click on the iTunes Radio section under the left panel Library section you will be a shown listing of music genres such as Blues, Classical or Pop. Clicking on the genre heading's little triangle triangle icon will show you all the streams classified under the heading. For example, Pop shows 300 streams on iTunes today. You can play any stream by clicking on the listing.

If you want to save the stream to a playlist so that you quickly find it later –

  1. Create a new playlist by going to the menu File > New Playlist
  2. Return to Radio and drag the station to your new playlist, listed under the left panel Playlists section.

You can add as many stations as you want to this playlist.

If you create multiple stream playlists there is a way to create a smart playlist that will automatically show all your saved radio stations –

  1. Create a new smart playlist by going to the menu File > New Smart Playlist...
  2. Change the Artist to Kind by clicking on the drop down list.
  3. Leave contains as is.
  4. Type Stream in the empty box.
  5. Click the OK button.

If you have trouble getting a not-so-local radio station's broadcast signal consider streaming it instead. Most radio stations stream their programs as well as broadcast them. There is probably a link on the station's website to play the stream on your computer or smartphone . For example, you can listen to WQXR in iTunes by:

Selecting from the menu Advanced > Open Audio Stream...

Typing http://htc-01.media.qualitytech.com/COMP005996MOD1/wqxr.pls

Clicking the OK button.

Here are a sample of the some of the stations I listen to:
