Adobe Acrobat - Free PDF Printers

You are probably familiar with Adobe Acrobat Reader because it is necessary to view a PDF file. It is free and it is installed on almost all personal computers regardless of the operating system. Your computer probably came with it pre-installed. The Adobe Acrobat PDF file format is a worldwide standard for sending documents. PDF stands for portable document format.

If you have a PC you need extra software beyond Acrobat Reader to make a PDF file. Basic PDF-making capability is built into the Mac OS. Adobe sells Acrobat 7.0 Standard for $299 and the Professional version for $449. This is a lot of money for something that most people use as an alternative to a printer. You can buy either version for less at many retailers.

You do not have to use Adobe Acrobat to create a PDF file. There are less expensive programs that can make PDF files from your documents. Some of them are free to download and use.

There are two different categories of free PDF creators. First, there are programs you install on your computer and treat as an additional printer. They are simple to use after you download and install them. Once you install them, they act like printers on your computer. For example, you want to “print” a Word document to a PDF file so that you can email it to someone. You select File-Print from Word’s menu. You then select the Acrobat printer you installed from the Printer Name list. When you click on the OK button to print it Word will ask you where to save the PDF file and what to name it. It is really quite easy to use.

These PDF printers are great if you have a portable computer that is not always attached to a printer. Just print to a PDF file for now and a regular printer later on. You might even email the PDF to yourself for printing from a different computer later.

I have four, highly rated, free programs from which to choose. Each one is both free to download and to use. Some have restrictions on non-personal or commercial use. You should check the license for the program to see that you will be using it in an approved manner. They are CutePDF Writer, PDF4Free, PDFCreator, and PrimoPDF. The links to the websites are at the end of this article. Please note: at least one of them, PDF4Free, appends a small message to the end of the PDF file advertising itself.

The other category of free PDF creator is an online service named PDF Online. You upload your document to the service and provide an email address. The service converts your file and emails you the PDF as an attachment. There is nothing to install and it can be used from any computer connected to the internet. The uploaded file is limited to 2 MB or less. Another limitation is that TrueType fonts are not embedded in the PDF so the PDF may not display the way you want.
