Excel - Keeping list headings always in view

We often use Excel to keep lists. If the list grows too long to fit on the screen it may become hard to remember what a column's information is as we scroll down the page. Is column D 2005 or 2006? The solution to this problem is simple. Excel can freeze rows with column headings so that are always in view.

Here is how to do that:

  • Display your spreadsheet so that the list headings are the topmost on-screen rows.

  • Grab the small horizontal pane control on the top of the vertical scroll bar and drag it down to the bottom of the headings rows.

Windows Excel 2000-2003 and Mac Excel 2004/2008 versions

  • Select Window-> Freeze Panes from the menu.

Windows Excel 2007

  • Select the View tab on the Excel Ribbon.
  • Select the Freeze Panes -> Freeze Top Row control.
Excel 2007 is limited to the top row. If you want to freeze several rows you need to add the Freeze Panes control to the Quick Access Tool Bar. This will restore the functionality that existed by default in earlier Excel versions.

There is an identical vertical pane control that lets you split the panes for columns. It is located to the right end of the horizontal scroll-bar.
